Yes. Once the filming permit is approved, foreign crew members must apply for:

  • Film visa C-14 or Journalist visa.
  • Or a Limited Stay Permit (KITAS) for longer productions.

Do not enter on a tourist visa for production work—it is illegal.

  • Prepare all documents needed for each film crew to apply for the film visa.
  • Visit your nearest Indonesian Embassy and explain that you're going to apply for a filming visa. Present all documents you have and they will do the checklist. If they need more documents they will let you know, and if all documents are complete, then they will receive your application and send/submit/forward all documents to a committee called “Foreign Visit Coordination Team” in Jakarta.
  • The Indonesian government (“Foreign Visit Coordination Team”) reviews applications weekly, with decisions made on Thursdays. The review process can take about two to four weeks depending on the queuing or workload plus the completeness of the documentation. If your film visa application is approved, they will notify and send an approval document to the embassy. Generally they also send the notification to me as your local partner/fixer.
  • Along the way the film visa process, The Film Department of Cultural Ministry will process the filming permit document. If you want to do the shooting in a National Park (Like Carstens Pyramid, for example) then they will require us to provide a document called “Conservation Area Entry Permit” released by the Environmental Ministry and/or the Forestry Ministry. We will work on this documentation.
  • When all is complete and done, we will apply for your filming visa through the immigration online platform. In this stage, we need you to send us a copy of your passport, photograph, your personal statement to obey Indonesia rules/law, and your short biography (including your address & telephone number). This online process will take about two weeks. Film visa approved and we will share it with you.

Yes, all foreign film/video productions crews require an official filming permit (locally called Shooting Permit or the document called Surat Izin Pengambilan Gambar) issued by:

  • The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbudristek)
  • In cooperation or coordinated with Film Development Center (Pusbangfilm) with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The application is reviewed by multiple agencies including local government, military, and police.

You must apply through an Indonesian counterpart or a local production company partner officially registered in Indonesia. Required documents typically include:

  • Synopsis/script.
  • Crew list with passport details.
  • List of filming locations.
  • Schedule of production.
  • List of equipment.
  • Letter of support from the Indonesian partner.
  • Await a vetting process (may take 2–4 weeks).

On average, the process takes 15–30 working days, depending on the complexity and filming locations. Filming in sensitive or remote areas may take longer due to additional approvals.

Yes. You must collaborate with an Indonesian-registered production company or registered fixer (with a valid account in Immigration platform to apply your visa). They help with:

  • Submitting permit applications.
  • Liaising with government offices.
  • Providing on-ground logistics.

Yes, but it requires a temporary import permit:

  • Use of ATA Carnet is recommended (if your country is a signatory)
  • Otherwise, submit a detailed equipment list to customs via your local partner.
  • Items must be re-exported after filming.

Yes. You need special approval or special permits/access if filming:

  • Military or government installations.
  • Indigenous or religious communities.
  • Politically sensitive content.
  • Military zones.
  • Some indigenous areas without community permission.
  • Protected forests or national parks (unless you get an additional permits)

Yes, but only with permission end equipped with legal documents:

  • Register the drone and obtain a permit from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
  • Coordinate with the Indonesian Air Force for airspace clearance.
  • Must be operated by a certified drone pilot (preferably local).

It depends on what issue you working on. You may be required coordination with related ministries or authorities to:

  • Submit interview questions in advance.
  • Gain written consent from subjects.

Filming without proper permits or visas can lead to:

  • Deportation.
  • Fines.
  • Confiscation of equipment.
  • Being blacklisted from re-entry.
